Dr Wybe Th. Douma

Wybe Douma specialises in EU law and international trade law, and more specifically environmental policy and law, EU external relations law, judicial protection, rule of law, enforcement and compliance, and legal aspects of the fight against organised crime, corruption and terrorism. Before joining EU Legal, for over 20 years he was Senior Researcher at the T.M.C. Asser Institute for International and European Law. He has worked throughout the EU and its neighbouring countries, the Caucasus, South America, Central and South-East Asia as team leader, senior legal expert and quality controller in a wide range of projects, notably in EU approximation, twinning and technical assistance programmes. He was seconded to the Legal Department of the Dutch Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment, and the Legal Department of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment, where he provided expert advice and input in treaty negotiations, coordinated interdepartmental dossiers and was part of the team representing the Netherlands in cases at the Court of Justice of the EU. He regularly provides legal advice to various ministries, the European Parliament, the European Commission, NGOs and law firms besides publishing frequently. Furthermore, he is board member of the Centre for the Law of EU External Relations (CLEER), editor for and contributor to several law journals, fellow of the Institute for Environmental Security and associate with the Centre for International Legal Cooperation (CILC).

Dr Karolien Pieters

Karolien Pieters specialises in EU law and notably internal market law, judicial protection, competition law, trade law and external relations law. Before joining EU Legal, she was a Senior Researcher in EU Law at the T.M.C. Asser Institute in The Hague. Her PhD is entitled‘The integration of the Mediterranean neighbours into the EU internal market’ and explains to what extent and how the Mediterranean neighbours have harmonized their legislation to the EU norms. She has also lectured at various universities. Furthermore, she was engaged in numerous advisory activities and delivered expert lectures on various aspects of EU law to policy makers and the judiciary throughout the European Union and elsewhere (e.g. Romanian, Polish, Bulgarian and Vietnamese civil servants, and judges in Bulgaria, Lithuania, Macedonia and Serbia). She was involved in numerous comparative studies for the European Commission and a variety of ministries. She also worked as a lawyer in a Belgian law firm, specialized in trade law, intellectual property law and criminal law.

Onur Güven, LL.M.

Onur Güven specialises in Public International Law, and more specifically in the law of treaties, UN law, international humanitarian law, and international arms control and disarmament law. He graduated at Utrecht University, where he obtained his bachelor in jurisprudence and his master in international and European law. His professional experience includes providing legal counsel on Dutch and EU law concerning contracts, labour conditions and labour negotiations for four years. For five years he worked as a Public International Law researcher at the Asser Institute, where he conducted legal research on commissioned projects and studies, including the implementation of international treaties, interpretation of treaty articles, studies concerning comparative law analysis regarding numerous EU Member States, as well as on criminal law matters. Next to his research experience, Onur also is proficient in the acquisition and implementation of research projects, including acquisitions, drafting project proposals, designing methodologies and project management.
